    Global picture, 2015–2023

UN Comtrade HS 0901: 118,099 reported bilateral flows across 9 years.

    Trade value
    $30B → $42B
    +42% in 9 years
    Green volume
    ~6.5 Bn kg
    essentially flat
    Green price/kg
    $2.51 → $4.22
    price shock, not growth

Roasted is the real growth story

Roasted coffee value climbed steadily from $9.3B to $15.2B with no spike — while green's share of total value fell from 68% to 64%. The 2022 surge in the chart above is green coffee re-pricing, not new demand.

    Re-export Europe dominates

Europe imports $22.4B and exports $14.6B — nearly half the world's coffee passes through it twice.

    • Switzerland exports $3.85B/year while growing none — that's Nespresso. Switzerland → France ($1.1B) and Switzerland → USA ($1.08B) are the two largest roasted flows in the dataset.
    • Germany ($2.68B exp / $3.50B imp) and Italy ($2.61B / $2.49B) operate as near-perfect re-export hubs.
    • South America ships $12.2B out and brings $0.7B in — a pure origin region.

    Winners and losers since 2015

Biggest export gains (% terms): Netherlands +176%, Uganda +157%, Italy +92%, Switzerland +88%, Ethiopia +68%.

Only major origin to lose ground: Indonesia (-18%). Every other top-15 exporter grew.
